Winter Boating in Marsden Cove: Making the Most of the Winterless North

Winter might mean fewer boats on the water around much of New Zealand, but up in the Winterless North, boating certainly doesn’t stop.

Positioned just inside the entrance to Whangārei Harbour, Marsden Cove Marina is a natural base for getting out on the water year-round. With sheltered marina facilities and open water only a short run away, a clear winter forecast can still mean a very good day out.

Boating Beyond the Summer Months

One of the advantages of Marsden Cove is its location. The marina sits approximately three nautical miles inside the harbour entrance, putting Bream Bay and the wider Northland coastline within easy reach. 

Head out past Whangārei Heads and there is plenty to explore. The Hen and Chicken Islands sit offshore, while heading north opens up the Tutukaka Coast, Whangaruru and eventually the Bay of Islands. To the south, Great Barrier Island and the Hauraki Gulf offer options for those looking to venture further.

Winter brings its own appeal. Pick the right weather window and you can enjoy quieter waterways, uncrowded anchorages and a completely different side of boating in Northland.

It doesn’t always need to mean a weekend away either. A winter morning fishing, a run out into Bream Bay or simply getting the boat off the marina for a few hours is often reason enough.

Marsden Cove is also well positioned for the practical side of boat ownership. The marina has dedicated haulout and hardstand facilities, while the wider Whangārei region has an established network of marine trades and services. 

For many owners, winter is the ideal opportunity to take care of maintenance, servicing and upgrades before the busier months arrive.
