On April 25th, 2025, sailors gathered for the annual 36° Brokers and Waitangi Yacht Club Whangaroa Race and Cruising Rally, embarking on the journey from Waitangi to Whangaroa Harbour. The event welcomed both competitive racers and leisurely cruisers, fostering a shared experience on the water.
Friday’s weather presented real challenges, with torrential rain and a 2-metre northeast swell putting crews' seamanship to the test. Even sheltered within Whangaroa Harbour, conditions proved too unsettled for the traditional raft-up — a much-loved highlight of the event. Instead of one large raft, boats gathered in small clusters of two or three, making the best of a wet and wild event.
Despite the conditions, participants navigated the course with determination, adhering to the event's guidelines, which included specific motoring allowances for cruising and racing divisions.
Looking ahead, the Bay of Islands Yacht Club invites all participants to the prize-giving ceremony and dinner on Friday, May 2nd. The evening promises to be a delightful conclusion to this year's rally, honouring the spirit of camaraderie and excitement of adventure that defines the Whangaroa Race.
